In a large city like London, which covers more than 1500 square kilometres, it helps to understand the different public transport options for moving around the city. The most useful is the London Underground, one of the most extensive and complete metro systems in the world.
The two best ways to get around London are by bus or by underground. Both of these transport systems are emblematic of the city; the bus service because of its world famous red double decker buses; and the underground because it is the oldest and most extensive system of its kind. More than one hundred and fifty years old, it covers over 420 kilometres, and has dozens of lines and nearly 300 stations.
Aside from the bus and the underground, the other typical way to get around town is by taxi in a famous black cab, another emblematic symbol of London.
If you are planning to explore areas outside of London while you are on holiday here, a good option is to hire a car. If you are not planning to leave the city during your stay, we do not recommend hiring a car.
